Look What We Found!

solo.jpg We found these four under the house. Aren't they sweet? Dean caught three of them. I caught the last one and the mother. Good thing mom is a sweetie, pretty unusual for a stray cat to be so calm and sweet. I guess it's a good thing I was dumb enough to grab her. Normally, I'm not so compulsive. I had to do it. Those babes need their momma and we can't allow more strays. We shall love and nurture them, so they will be nice & tame when we find them a good home.

**Update**

Laurence wants more cats for the Carnival. I've got 5...

Anyone want a kitten?

Do you ship to New Jersey? Gosh, they're cute. And I'm moving into a new pet-friendly place this weekend, so UPS one to me, ok?

Wait, never mind. Just had a flashback to litter box odor. Please cancel my order. Sorry.

Posted by: rick at April 29, 2004 03:27 PM

Since the mother is so calm, do you think she could belong to someone?

Posted by: lindenen at April 29, 2004 03:55 PM

She does have faint siamese markings, and they are known to be people friendly cats. Still, she could be someone's cat, or former cat.

Rosemary, go ahead and get her fixed. Then make her 're-pay' by providing company. From her picture I get the feeling she has no real problem with dogs and kids, and with you two hapless foo... ...kind souls she's sure to have a good home.

BTW, don't expect me to get your link up until later today. Yes, after the marathon revision of the MO links I ran out of steam.

I know that she doesn't belong to anyone because I've been feeding her and another stray all winter. Plus, I've asked around. Dean sayid that she was mine by default because I made sure she survived winter.

I don't remember who said a cat is a creature willing to enter into any relationship in order to abuse it...but I believe it's true.

I live with two of the dang things. Belong to my daughters. It's kind of like the cold war, we're at defcon5 but we don't trust each other..

Posted by: Dave in Texas at April 29, 2004 04:23 PM

Wow, they are really cute.

I guess you're owned now.

Don't let Dean give one away as a last minute Spirit of America prize!

Posted by: Mark at April 29, 2004 04:26 PM

Yeah, they are cute, ain't they?

But you wouldn't believe how often a friend or neighbor more-than-half-seriously asks me if I'd like to take one of their numerous cats home with me. I think it's one of the hazards of living in rural Iowa.

I always reply by saying:

(1) I'm more of a dog person;

(2) With my schedule, and living alone, I really can't take on the responsibility of a pet; and

(3) I live in Iowa (with people from Michigan, *ahem*, this excuse works; in Iowa, I have to come up with something more creative, like "Actually, I'm from Jupiter, have to be heading back there real soon now").

Can you ship one to San Antonio?

Posted by: Ben at April 29, 2004 05:46 PM

Awww... those are some lucky felines, Rosemary. If Bayou & I lived closer, I'd take one. Cleo coukd use a friend!!

Posted by: Lachlan at April 29, 2004 06:42 PM

Don't tell my mother. She's a sucker for strays.

I live in the middle of 7 acres of woods and have for 2 years fed a feral cat. She has had 2 litters, one in my sons boat, we did not manage to tame her enough to save the kittens, they gradually died off.
She needed spayed but we couldn't catch her. She had another litter last fall. One kitten is left, he looks like a purebred Siamese, but obviously is not.
I am taming him. He talks Siamese to me everytime I go outside. He really wants to be petted. Today I made my first cat to human contact. He was purring very loudly and doing kneading with his paws, so I tried the kneading thing. He reached out to me, kneading all the while. Quick touch. OUCH! he had his claws out, but wasn't meaning to harm, nevertheless I had a little prick that bled a lot. No pain, I just made sure it was clean.
I realized last night as my husband and I were walking around the grounds he was following and yeowling at us, always just behind a bush. Then he came out and sat down. I'll tame him yet. Then he gets neutered. No more stray kittens. His mama has left the premises, I've seen her about every 2 weeks for the past 3 months, she runs away. I think she is eating at someone elses house now.
Have fun with your kittens.

Call Barbara Walters and she may make you some offer on a reality show. The prize: kittens! (as opposed to a baby)

Posted by: mark at April 29, 2004 08:40 PM

awww they are so cute, i would love to take them as long as u can send them to NY

Posted by: tevren at April 29, 2004 08:41 PM

They are so precious. I have a Russian Blue that was completely nuts when she was a kitten (got her at a shelter). She always ran away every time you got near her. Super neurotic. But my boyfriend is the "cat hunter." Gets on his hands and knees and stalks the cat until she gives in and lets him pet her. Now she won't leave us alone and wants to be loved all the time. You just can't win with them.

I love cats though. I would take one, except that I'm in NY too. :o(

I've got a Manx cat. Has anyone ever heard of the breed before? Just curious.

Posted by: Gordon the Magnificent at April 29, 2004 09:57 PM

No tail or a stump of a tail, right?

Those cats are great hunters.

Posted by: Rosemary the Queen of All Evil at April 29, 2004 09:59 PM

Yeah! Looks like a bobcat. I got him at the refuge as a kitten and had no idea what a great find it was! My wife was looking at a cat website and came across the desription of the Manx species a year later and until then we thought he had his tail taken off by a door before we got him.

Great cats. They are very athletic and can jump incredible distances. They even play fetch and are loyal like a dog is to one person. Best cat ever!

The mom cat walks Jake to bus stop every morning. All kids call her Jake's "puppy".

I'm so glad that her kittens survived and that we found them at this age. Now they have a chance at a good life. Any longer they would have been feral. We get to love them, make them human friendly and find them good homes.

Cats are evil demonic elitist spawns of the devil and should be removed from this planet in an expedient manner.
Man I hate them.

Posted by: James Doney at April 29, 2004 10:55 PM

Evil huh? Then it should be no surprise that all cats love me.

For I am their queen.

Posted by: Rosemary the Queen of All Evil at April 29, 2004 11:13 PM

that explains it.

damn cats.

Posted by: Dave in Texas at April 29, 2004 11:14 PM

Your kindness will repay you with hears of furry love. Too cute.

Posted by: Sissy Willis at April 30, 2004 07:51 AM

...years, not hears...good grief (gotta try to remember to proofread before clicking "post"...

Posted by: Sissy Willis at April 30, 2004 07:53 AM

I must be evil, also. Cats always love me.

Those are precious kitties, Rosemary! And a pretty kitty mama.

You have such a kind heart!

Posted by: Beth Donovan at April 30, 2004 01:05 PM

I'm not that fond of kittens, but the mom's beautiful. Like Alan said, she looks quite Siamese-ish.

But I almost adopted a Maine Coon last weekend (almost, because he has ringworm), so if anyone gets a home from me, it'll be him. In a month or two... If I can bear the thought of a litter box in the house... And my dog approves...

Posted by: Tanya at April 30, 2004 03:02 PM

They're beautiful! Yup, Mama looks like she has Siamese in her background. Was Daddy a tiger, I wonder?

Posted by: Rahel at May 3, 2004 01:58 AM

Tanya: there is a scoopable litter that fixes the odor problem. It's made from crushed wheat heads...doesn't track much and is safe for everyone...no nasty toxic clay dust. The most you ever smell is a light yeasty aroma when scooping the box.

You have to get it at a pet store or online, but I wouldn't go back to scoopable clay litter if it were free.

Oh..it's called S-Wheat.

Finding them under the house, all halfway grown up takes all the fun out of it. Much more fun to be chasing the cat down when she's gone off to hide to give birth and come to the rescue when she misses a placenta and I get to cut the cord.

Oh, and kittens do pose a threat, it is near impossible to look at them without going for the camera. Over 600 kitty pics so far. Good thing it's a digital camera.

Posted by: mog at May 5, 2004 11:09 AM

The mother cat definitely has tabby-point Siamese markings, but the proportion of the face doesn't look right to be a Siamese. How peculiar! Bless you for taking them in!
