I rooted FOR the Pistons...before I rooted against them.

How sweet it is! Three in a row at home, the Lakers dragging themselves back to LA, who could ask for more?

I can't think of a more satisfying championship...

Let the gloating begin!

Posted by: Ara Rubyan at June 16, 2004 12:26 AM

Wow!! I haven't been watching the games at all but I am a die hard Lakers Fan no matter what, they have always pulled through for me.

I heard that it was a good battle here and Detroit surely deserved their kudos, Congratulations to Detroit and their fans!

Well I hope they make it all the way and win the Championship.... Good Luck Pistons.

Posted by: Rhye at June 16, 2004 12:30 AM

Rhye,

Um....

They did just win the championship. The Lakers are over.

WOO-HOOOOOOOOOO!!!

At the beginning of the playoffs, I ranked the teams in order Indianapolis, San Antonio, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Sacramento, Dallas, New Jersey. I was surprised when Los Angeles beat San Antonio and disappointed when Indianapolis had Ron Artest get injured. I was also surprised when Miami played so well against Indianapolis.

But Detroit was clearly a better team than Los Angeles. Congratulations Mo-town. And given that Indianapolis, even when injured, played much better than LA, well let's just say that LA was not even the second best team this year.

ahhahaha... thought they were to play the Spurs? Ack!.... I'm no good at sports uhmm.. thanks Dean *slaps forehead*

Posted by: Rhye at June 16, 2004 02:57 AM

Rhye: You're a die-hard Lakers fan and thought the Pistons were playing the Spurs as of 12:30 this morning? Ok...

I can't believe what a series this was. I live and breathe for NCAA basketball every year since about 1985,,,I am nuts for college ball and am not normally into the pros but this series hooked me because Rip Hamilton is a UConn graduate and being from Connecticut, and since UConn is the basketball capital of the world (nyahhahahahaaayah DUKE), I started watching since Game 1 this year. Lakers flat-out looked old, tired, and got their collective sorry asses trashed, stomped, and stuffed into garbage bags to be picked up at the curb. Payton and Malone? Im too thrilled they were trashed just because of those two. Pistons were hungry for it, played for it, and nearly won it in four. Im almost glad it was five, though, just so the fans could savor one extra ass-kicking.

I like your attitude, Vickie. :-)

Posted by: Dean Esmay at June 16, 2004 06:07 AM

Well I meant that they went on to play against the Spurs but someone been there and done that... duh! *slaps forehead* Like I said I haven't watched any games this season and only heard quips of this and that... Sorry!

Posted by: Rhye at June 16, 2004 07:04 AM

I'm still not convinced the Hornets are mathematically out of it yet.

Posted by: Big Dan at June 16, 2004 07:05 AM

Hell yeah, Vickie. Storrs is Hoops Town, USA. In eight days UConn will follow up both NCAA championships, the #1 overall WNBA pick, and a star contributor on the NBA champions by having the #1 overall pick in the NBA draft and 2 guys taken in the lottery.

A UConn alums NBA all star team would beat all comers. Not Kentucky, not UNC, not Arizona, none of them can hold a candle to the UConn guys in the NBA.

Bill Davidson, owner of the Pistons not only won the NBA championship but also owner of the Tampa Bay Lighting (Stanley Cup winners this year) and owner of the Detroit Shock (WNBA winners last year).

That is one hell of an owner!

Congrats to the Pistons and all you Piston fans. This Laker fan salutes you.

The Pistons deserve their championship. They wanted it more than the lakers did. It's that simple.

Posted by: Juliette at June 16, 2004 09:57 AM

Hooray for the Pistons! Hooray for Ben Wallace's magnificent afro! Hooray for the adulterous crybaby multimillionaire Kobe Bryant sniffling all the way back to his trial! Ha ha ha! Freaking Lakers! The curse of the choke-tastic Karl Malone dragged your super-team down at last. How sweet it is! Thousands of other Jazz fans cheer with me at your ignominious defeat. Ha ha ha! Losers!

Posted by: House of Payne at June 16, 2004 10:08 AM

Sorry. Got carried away with the schadenfreude there for a minute...

CONGRATS PISTONS! 2004 NBA CHAMPS!!

Hey Juliette,

I don't buy the crap about the Pistons wanting it more than the Lakers. I can guarantee you that Malone & Payton wanted it more than all the Pistons combined. The Lakers downfall is that a group of individuals will always lose to a cohesive team. The Pistons played the team game to perfection.

Last year Gary Payton was the goto guy in Seattle and Karl Malone was the goto guy in Utah. They both couldn't do it on their own so they signed with Shaq & Kobe & the Lakers. That made a team of 4 individual superstars that are used to doing things on their own. That worked for them in the regular season and through the first 3 rounds of the playoffs. Why? Because teams in the West don't play as a unit, its usually one or two guys that go off. When the Lakers made it to the finals, they never played a team.

The Pistons were never about one player. Shut one player down and two others step up. The funny thing about this series is that the Pistons left Shaq & Kobe alone, let those two take the shots they wanted, and shut the rest of the team down. For that, the Lakers had no answer. Kobe started his selfish play, and the Lakers imploded.

The Lakers really wanted the title, but the Pistons earned it.

One More thing:

Saying that the Pistons "wanted" it more than the Lakers is a feeble attempt at providing the Lakers an excuse for losing.

Its as if people are saying, the Lakers are a better team and they just ran into a team that was on a roll.

That couldn't be further from the truth. The Pistons outclassed the Lakers in every aspect of the game. The Pistons were the better team.

If the series went 7 games and the Pistons won 4 and lost 3 really close games, I'll buy the story of the Pistons wanting it more than the Lakers.

However, this series should have been a sweep, and if it weren't for a collapse and a miracle shot, it would have been.

In the Pistons 4 wins, they won by 12, 20, 8 & 13.

The 8 points should have been 10 if not for a meaningless dunk with .9 seconds left. Also, in last nights game, the Pistons were up by 28 and quit. Now that is a sign of a classy team. Very minimal effort would have produced a 30+ point win in the clinching game. The Pistons last 2 points were to hit the 100 point mark. The Lakers ended the game on a 17-2 run (after it was 98-70).

Congrats Pistons! You earned it!

What really scares me after seeing all the "nah nah"s is how Rose is gonna respond after spanking me in our debate over at Iron Blog. I'll probably be in tears.

Again.

Posted by: Big Dan at June 16, 2004 11:03 AM

Don't worry Dan,

The IB is fixed and its Rose's turn to lose..

Congrats!

Posted by: Jerry at June 16, 2004 11:09 AM

Well, good. I'll stop working so hard now.

Posted by: Big Dan at June 16, 2004 01:09 PM

I guess you can take some solace in the Pistons win after the Wingies were shown the door so early. ;-)

Congrats to Larry Brown has coached a team to an NCAA championship and an NBA championship.
Now its time to try and repeat.

Posted by: James Doney at June 16, 2004 01:13 PM

Congrats to Larry Brown and the Pistons for winning the championship, and heartfelt thanks for showing the value of the team concept in basketball.

That said, enjoy it while you can, fellas...the Cavaliers are coming. (muhuhahahahahakaffkaff)

Still think the best NBA players that NEVER went to college would easily defeat a team comprised of UConn Alumni.
