First of all, the Iraqi invasion is not and never was a war of "revenge" even if Maria says it is. I read her comments at her site yesterday after DSD linked it. You are absolutely correct, Queen, in rejecting her false premise that we should all just apathetically accept any injustice or external threat because those who hurt us will someday "die anyway" quite possibly in a flood or earthquake.
Quite honestly, I don't think such sentiment even fits into the philosophy of a liberal or a sensible conservative for that matter. I don't think this reflection was one of Maria's better ones. The logic is twisted and if followed, would produce chaos in normal human societies. It does remind me though of prevailing European liberal apathy and lethargy such as the definition of "genocide" which must involve the killing of no less than a million people to warrant UN or EU concern. (See Sudan or Kosovo) Bah.
I read it. And I also reject the notion that we should just let evil people inflict harm upon us (or anybody else) just because we're all going to die someday.
The place where Maria is stuck is her conviction that the war in Iraq is a war of revenge. The arguments have already been made, and I'm not going to make them again. We simply disagree.
I have to admit I do not know her position on the war in Afghanistan, but I am curious.
Her father than went on to do a New Years Poem for her. Bully for her for her convictions, but I have never heard her put down FDR for WWII. It gets tiresome after awhile.
And Rosemary- how about the trouble you caused just by having a sense of humor and a clear sense of proportion of things! You are naughty! Nunya, what a clown.
Yeah, I'm a bad girl. Notice that Maria and everyone else seemed to not find me offensive. Only Nunya. Poor, sad Nunya. He's not happy if he's not blaming a Republican for something evil.
It's nice to pursue justice and combat evil. It's even nicer to do so intelligently and effectively. I would note, however, that the man who has admitted commanding the evil is still free to make videotapes and is quite chipper about the whole thing, thank you.
We seem to have been busy committing thousands of troops to the task of shooting at someone else to no great purpose. We also, or at least a bare majority of us, appear to be satisfied that shooting at someone else, for whatever reason or lack of it, is perfectly adequate for the purpose of pursuing justice and combatting evil.
Maria may have a point: As things now stand, Osama Bin Laden may just die of sickness or old age, and we should all be prepared to be philosophical about this fact.
I'm sure Maria will be delighted if OBL dies of old age or some innocuous accident. She will ever be convinced that he WORKS FOR THE CIA and as their operative, planned the WTC and Pentagon attacks. That theory supports her (or is it her monther's?) theory that GWB planned, financed, executed and is now harboring the scapegoat of the 9/11 attacks.. You know, I am not rabidly partisan and it's absolutely fascinating to listen to and contemplate such well thought out delusions of fellow Americans in a clinical sort of way.
