HIV Skepticism
Dean has a post challenging the theory that HIV causes AIDS. He has lots of sources and it is really interesting reading. I don't know what to think because I am not a scientist, although I went to college and double majored in Biology and Chemistry. I have more than just a basic understanding of science and scientific theory. I have also read Duesberg and found that his assertions haven't been disproved. I find his research credible and he hasn't been debunked by anything newer than "nuh-uh, HIV causes AIDS period", which is scientist talk for "Lalalalala, I can't hear you".

I do know that we, humans, have a habit of believing things if they are repeated enough. Is that what the HIV=AIDS theory is? Repetition or solid science? I just don't know but I do know that doctors and scientists don't like to be challenged by anything. Anything that goes against conventional wisdom is bad, so any scientist brave/crazy enough to say that a theory is wrong will be ostracized and shouted down until they have undisputable proof. Unfortunately, HIV has not been proven to cause AIDS but it has been accepted by scientists as good enough.

Is it right? I don't know. I know scientific theories have been proven wrong in the past, despite the kicking and screaming of the majority before, so who knows what the future holds for HIV=AIDS.

Link is broken. Trailing period at the end of the URI. It's a very interesting read.

You apparently missed that section in your science class where it was mentioned that in 19th century, we gave up "claims to absolute truth." Instead what we have is a collection of theories that explain all of the known observations. If a better set of theories comes along, then we will drop the old one. If a new observation comes along, we will start trying to create new theories (that explain all of the observations).

So far the HIV=AIDS is the best theory going, but it is only a theory. No scientist will ever give you more than a theory. You want more talk to a minster/priest/rabbi/etc. They will each give you "absolute truth" that may or may not agree with observable reality. (Nothing is ever "proven" in science, although some observations recur.

Look at it this way - would you have unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive?

Wow, staring a dialogue by insulting me isn't going to get you very far. Unless, of course, you aren't interested in a dialogue.

Either way, you have obviously missed the point that I was making.

That was a good read over at Dean's! I think what scares me about the dialogue is the fact that we are seeing a good portion of the younger kids that think they won't get aids. They think it is a wives tale I guess. Young gay couples are having unprotected sex as if aids does not exist. Until it can be proven otherwise, I guess I just don't want to rock the boat.(I know, wishy washy and dumb!)

I don't know who is scientifically right, wronmg, or whatever in this debate, but I do know that I admire Dean for thinking for himself and saying what he thinks.

I admire the Queen
For marrying Dean.

I'll boil down what I said at Dean's to 4 words:

Correlation is not Causation.
