That one is kind of based on a short story written by Larry Niven back in the 80's I believe.
In the short, the driver is a man who picks up a hitchhiker. The hitchhiker pulls a gun and the driver simply accelerates the car to about 75 mph and notes that the hiker doesn't have a seatbelt, and if he wanted to avoid being real dead real soon, he better throw the gun out the window before they reach that truck.
As Niven pointed out, the hiker made one mistake, he thought his gun was a biggger weapon then the car.

Hmm, got the date wrong. The story was "The Deadlier Weapon" and it was published in 1968.
