Thank you for paying tribute to these space men, the actor who played a space man of the future, and the space men of 1969 who made all future space adventures possible.
That's one reason why I'm glad I'm not young. Seeing Neil Armstrong take that one small step for a man, that giant leap for mankind (including womankind -- HAIL TO THE QUEEN....), was one of the greatest thrills of my life, the greatest historic event I ever witnessed or probably ever will witness, ranking with Christopher Columbus's first step onto the New World in 1492.
We must ever strive for the highest. High and noble. "....The Ego in the Infinite...." (Oswald Spengler, The Decline of the West) "....The total passion for the total height...." (Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead) The Individual striving eternally for the Divine....
Space is a great challenge. But nobody are interested space travel now. In 1961 started more spce rocket than now. We have got really problem, it is not JFK time. We have not got "Apollo Program". We only talk about "new frontiers", "New opportunities", and do nothing. Space Shuttle Prgram is a disater. 50-years old "Soyoz" is better space ship like your Space Shuttle !!! People wake up, YOUR COUNTRY IS A EMPIRE !!!! Do you want chinese space ships on the orbit and any American space ships there?
P.S. I never like "Star Trek" I am "Star Wars" baby:) But I know who was James Doohan.
Robert, as we speak, scientists are working out the technology to make the missle defense shield work. Our major concern for world safety is keeping insane fanatics from setting off nukes over our heads and yours. That's where we need to spend our space dollars right now, I guess. Space exploration is still important and won't be forgotten. Just too much to do and too little dollars... :)
I love all the Star Trek movies and programs. Captain Picard, very sexy.
I am a Sci-Fi nut! Well, not in the bad sense (as in a juror wearing a Starfleet uniform), but in the good sense that I envision.
A united World spreading humanity throughout the Universe. Our chance to explore, learn, and prevent all of our "eggs" from nestling in one "basket." Our dear planet Earth.
Our missile defense sheild is a sham, invented and advocated when there was another superpower with the ability (and interest) to actually launch ICBM's at us. China may well evolve into that category, but it is not currently a real threat, in that sense. The greater threat from China is their ability to overtake us as the greatest economic might (from which World domination and military might can then follow.)
Our only real progress, of late, has been in the advance of weapons in space that target *ground* targets. Like the "Rods From God" program, which can hurtle titanium rods at specific ground targets with deadly consequences equal to an atomic blast. The only successful missile defense attributed to that part of the program involved a booster to the signal of the target's ID that identified it as hostile. I doubt China or anyone else (Iran, North Korea?) would feel an obligation to do this to make their missiles more identifiable.
Only diplomacy, and another Cold War with these states, has any real promise of realistically deterring them from action. The problem is, these states are in a part of the world where government views can be changed at whim.
Again, we must fight the root cause of their hatred for us, and undermine it. In this way we can spread Democratic values in the ME and elsewhere. In order to assure that the extremists do not gain control of their governments and their weapons.
As far as Picard goes, I agree that he is sexy. Sure, he's a handsome bald man. What makes him eminently more sexy (IMO as a heterosexual), is that we see in him a conflict to decide what is right and wrong. And his willingness to make decisions that consider viewpoints different from his own personal views.
Here's an interesting essay on US foreign strategy. I really like to read this guy. He's very academic and does research for a living. His views are very thought provoking. I recommend a read as he raises good points.

Oh, and by the way: Dean Esmay informs me that James Doohan did something even greater in real life -- he fought the Nazis at Normandy in World War II.
