I Like Pie

Actually, I like pot pies. I have recently discovered the wonder that is the Marie Callender Creamy Parmesean Chicken pot pie. The thing is massive, weighing in at 16.5ozs. It tastes like a noodle free Chicken Alfredo in a cripsy crust. I love that it gets crisp right in the microwave.

I cooked it at 10am (yummy breakfast) and I managed half then and I just wolfed down the other half for lunch at 2pm. I'm so full and my tummy is happy. I'm just sad that there isn't any left for dinner.

What's your favorite freezer to microwave food?

My freezer always has pot pies in various flavors. Pot pies are not only good but make for a quick balanced meal.

Even better yet for my taste are pastys, especially when home made (quite easy to make), but a few store bought brands are good though not easy to find.

Several Yupper recipes here.

Mine is similar the the "Marquette recipe" except that I add a couple of carrots.

I love pot pie, but I've never found a frozen one I liked. The downfall is almost always the sauce - gluey and sometimes bright yellow. Usually not very much filling, either.

Seems to me I've tried Marie Callender's in the past and not liked it any better, but maybe I need to give it another try.

Don't have a microwave, but I do like my own frozen baguettes. I just undercook them by five minutes when I make them on the weekend, then freeze them. Duiring the week, straight from the freezer to the oven for ten minutes, then it's fresh hot bread with dinner.

Trader Joes makes an AWESOME Shepherd's Pie with lots of veggies and real meat. $3.99 and it's enoguh for 2 meals. I usually heat it for dinner and we dig in with two forks :)

Adam,

Marie's are filled with huge chunks of white meat chicken and the parmesean sauce is not thick, yellow or gluey at all. She make's a chicken with mushroom one too that is pretty good. My 8 year old hates pot pies for the same reasons you listed, he loved these.

We don't have Trader Joe's here in Wisconsin. Sounds good, though.

Marie Callender does some nice stuff. However, those pot pies have about 35 grams of fat.

One Marie Callender with cheese sits in my very freezer this moment. 570 calories of pure guilt of which 330 are pure fat. Do I risk the heart attack and the cholesterol binge or just nuke it.

Undecided but guilt-ridden.

Gosh, no wonder it tastes so good. My box says 32 grams of fat and 30 cholesterol.

If you have a heart condition and you are supposed curb the fat, I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

I'm not too concerned with the fat myself. My blood pressure has been on the low side, I just got congrats for getting it back up to a normal range (110/70). my last cholesterol reading was 159 (LDL was 90 and my HDL was 69) even my triglicerides are okay at 132.

It's people like you that make the rest of us look bad.

BTW, try Marie Callender's Lasagne. Only 15 Grams of fat and about 250 calories, yet it weighs in at a full pound and is quite tasty.

McKiernan:
I don't know my cholesterol but I figure its okay if its under 1000. Well, that what my doc says. His name is Ben Dover MD.

BTW, all the guilt is in the cardboard, as I just nuked the pie and will be eating shortly.

But, um, not into the microwave -- strictly oven baked.

My oven died about a month ago, so I'm cooking strictly stovetop and micro. We are putting off replacing it because the roof was more important.

Crawfish pie.

I hate people who have crawfish big enough to eat in their neighborhoods. I've eaten crawfish once, and I still think of it fondly, though it were nearly thirty years ago.

Marie Callender pot pies are the bomb! The wife and I (along with the kids) pay homage to her daily.

Come on down for Jazz Fest -- we'll show you a good time and we can eat all the crawfish you want.

Would love to sometime, I've always wanted to visit the French-speaking part of your country :)

In the meanwhile, y'know, job, kids, bills, etc...

Had one of the Marie Callender's Parmesan Chicken pot pies over the weekend. I liked it, and the sauce was good. Sort of surprised by the broccoli, though - not my favorite vegetable, and something I didn't expect in a pot pie. Otherwise, I'd recommend it.

I only have one freezer to nuke food, frozen burritos when I'm at work and don't feel like going out to eat.

In general, freezer-nuke "food" is almost food. Usually not. Although Marie Callender is the closest to food out there. An old girlfriend loved their stuff.

If I want something that tastes like alfredo, I'll get a chunk of Locatelli romano, some light cream, some Barilla Spinach and Ricotta tortellini and have some tortellini alfredo.

The Boston Market frozen stuff is pretty good, too. If you can find Claim Jumper frozen dinners, they're all right too. Anything named after a real restaurant, basically. ;)

The only bad thing about Marie Callander's stuff is that the microwave cooking instructions are often akin to rocket science. "Puncture the plastic film over the chicken and microwave on high 5 minutes. Now pull back the plastic film over the rice, stir, re-cover, and microwave on medium for 3:30. Finally, using Jupiter's gravity well to achieve solar escape velocity..."

I'm going to have to try the pot pie, though... broccoli is my favorite vegetable.

Note that the "250 calories" for Marie Callendar's lasagna is PER SERVING and there are nearly three servings in a package. Sorry, you don't get to eat a pound of food for 250 calories. Still, you can certainly get away with eating a whole one for dinner, maybe adding a salad.
