Expecting to be smitten any time now by the Tim-inator for even linking to definitions. I forgot words only mean what libs say they mean. (when they can be pinned down to meanings, that is)
Oh dear god some folks need to grow the hell up! Niggardly is a perfectly acceptable word (as is it's stupified Southern kissin' cousin - oh shit, I offended some Rednecks somewhere!)
I remember the uproar that Nappy hair caused, because a WHITE teacher gave it as a reading assingment to black and mexican kids. OH the horrors! Won't Someone PLEASE think of the CHILDREN!!
I don't think words are good or bad. They are inherently powerless objects. It is only through our own blinders and filters that words take on conotations not given them naturally. That says more about the listener and the speaker than any word in any language in any time.
As for "in spades", que? Why would that be the trap? It aludes to a suit in a deck of cards...Or am I missing some previously unknown racial slur that only Revered Ass Jackson can comprehend?
Okay, maybe I'm tweaking ++UG a little too hard now but my point is that I should be able to go to a fishing equipment convention and utter the phrase 'black jig head' without either Jesse Jackson's prior approval or subsequent condemnation. Romney's choice of words tells us nothing more than the demographic cadre (age-group for all you listeners in Rio Linda) to which he belongs. I might have said, in the same situation, that the Big Dig issue was radioactive.
Hey folks, the swastika was a sign of good luck for thousands of years before Hitler got hold of it. (omg, I Godwinized my own thread!) Why should we always let the most negative connotation of a word rule its use? If a Democrat politician (of which Massachusetts has a few) had used the phrase 'tar baby' in the exact same context, there would be nothing to see here.

Attention, this is a test, this is only a test. In the case of an actual intelligent conversation you would be instructed to step away from the AM band and find a classic rock station in your area.

If a Democrat politician..... actually defended his racism instead of apologizing profusely for such a gaff, we'd laugh them out of the party.
You guys just validate his parking ticket and move on.
I never heard Robert Byrd apologize for using the phrase "white nigger". Don't think Jesse Jackson apologized for "Hymietown". And if you still think the phrase 'tar baby' is nothing but racist, there is no use talking to you.

Step away from the "race threads." They're not your bag baby. It seems like you're trying to hard. I mean, I bet some of your best friends are black as well.

Hey Tim, let him go. Homie's got game. I ain't seen go all Mel Gibson on us yet, but he wants to. Just give Homie some mo rope. He know what to do wid it.
Niggardly, as I'm damned sure you know but are hoping others don't, derives from an old Norse word meaning stingy.

Dammit! Yes, I did.

Tell it to Trent Lott.
