Why didn't they show his execution on any of the news channels? Not the sanitized version -- the whole monty. Rope around the neck, the drop, the twitching, cutting him down, the whole thing?
Probably because its a bit grotesque. Never mind, I'm soon it will all be on YouTube soon, and it can be watched by those hungry for those kinds of spectacles.
By the way, did you hear that the executioners called out "long live Muqtada al-Sadr" as the rope was put around his neck? Ironic.

A couple of thoughts:
First, I've always thought that the death penalty should be performed in public so that people understand the true scope of the punishment.
Secondly, and to be blunt, Americans are being "spared" the pictures that show the true cost of this war. In other words, some pictures of Saddam, no pictures of the coffins of the service men and women who died to depose him.
Show it all -- what are afraid of?
P.S. I've heard all sorts of stories about who said what while they were gathered on the gallows. Everyone has an axe to grind.
As a noose was tightened around Hussein's neck, one of the executioners yelled "long live Muqtada al-Sadr," Haddad said, referring to the powerful anti-American Shiite religious leader.
...
Al-Rubaie said that while the execution was carried out with due respect to Hussein -- and following "all international and Islamic standards" -- some witnesses and the executioner could not resist celebrating by dancing around the body after the hanging.
I imagine there is much dancing among al-Sadr's militia today. And in Tehran too.
I hope that at the very least it brings some comfort to the families of his victims.

Might also apply to the self-censorship the US media uses to prevent showings some of the photos of the Iraqi civilian carnage as well.
TEHRAN, Iran: Iran hailed on Saturday the execution of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein as "enforcer of the most horrendous crimes against humanity" but many Iranians said Saddam must have stood trial for invading Iran and Kuwait before being hanged.
"Saddam, enforcer of the most horrendous crimes against humanity, has been put to death," Iran's state-run television reported Saturday.
"With the execution of Saddam, the dossier of one of the world's most criminal dictators was closed," it said.
There is only one course left for you to take now that Saddam bin Laden is finally dead. You must give a speech in prime time detailing your long battle against this man. Your father should be made to kneel down beside you as you address the nation, so that once and for all, the world will know that you are a better man and a greater leader than him. Saddam's dead, naked body should be draped over the podium as you speak, and once you've finished, you should have your way with it to demonstrate that you've achieved the only thing you ever really wanted to accomplish in Iraq, the total domination of the man your father couldn't control, not with weapons sales or war. Then, you should bring our troops home.
Why not?
