Free Speech Curbed In Pakistan

Pakistani lawmakers have succeeded in banning a play that satirizes burqas.

Huh, wonder if we could get away with lawmakers banning blasphemous plays in the U.S.? Somehow, I doubt it. Stupid First Amendment.

A free society begins with free speech. Then, I guess, no one ever said Pakistan wanted a free society.

Well, I suppose there is this:

Mehnaz Rafi, a lawmaker for the ruling Pakistan Muslim League from Lahore, opposed the government giving in to the Islamists.

"A few people cannot dictate affairs of the state. Every person has the right to lead his life his own way. A few people cannot snatch freedom from society," Rafi said.

Shahid Nadeem, the director of the play, told the weekly Friday Times that the play aimed to raise awareness about a trend to force women to wear the veil.

Progressive Pakistanis have become increasingly shocked by how bold religious radicals have become in spreading their Taliban-style values in society.

I some people do want a free society after all!

There are people in every society that want freedom. Pakistan is unlikely to get any sort of freedom any time soon, however, particularly with the support that Musharraf is receiving from the Bush administration.
