Well Arnold, I was genuinely concerned about your absence. One never knows, especially at our age (although you have 7 years on me). :-) Glad to see you active though, and I must say you have much more ambition that I could ever muster.

I help out in the community on a small scale, although mostly just in my own ward. About the only exercise I get is bicycle riding in the summer 2 or 3 times a week. I have a room full of workout and exercise equipment filling a spare that I should use more in the winter when I can't cycle. I try to keep it a high priority when I don't get outside, but seems I can't keep it high on my list very long.

Anyway, welcome back, and don't stay away so long. I understand you have a lot on your plate, but just a short note to say hi once in a while will ease our mind. Although we have not meet eyeball to eyeball I know you enough from your writing with the Esmays and the Madison forum to worry.

Good to hear from you, Arnold. I for one have missed your commentary at Dean's World. And it sounds as though Cross Plains is lucky to have you. I'm a big fan of good transit planning.

Arnold Harris:
Hello again, Sandi. I don't worry much or even think on mortality. All things being what they are, we live until we die. For me, that could happen in 25 years or it could happen in 25 microseconds.

Until then, I have to support myself, I have all kinds of project work I've taken on for this local community, and I have to get up at 6am or so every morning and get my ass in gear. Life for me in the microcomputer and internet age hasn't changed a hell of a lot since I was in the US Army more than half a century ago. Just duty and the need to get it done.

Hello to you too, DPUG. I'm not a fan of any particular mode of transportation. But as a trained urban planner, I try to espouse what I know to be right for a particular community to fit a need revealed by analysis of the data.

One thing I can tell you about all this. Everybody talks a good game about being open-minded about transportation needs. But there seem to be influential lobbyists working against the idea of any and all kinds of public transit. So arguing this stuff with public officials can be an uphill struggle.

Damn, Arnold, it's good to hear from you. I really was beginning to wonder where you'd gone to.

Just last week I was mentioning to my brother (a longtime lurker at Dean's World, who by the way happens to live in Madison), "I wonder whatever happened to Arnold Harris?" We were seriously wondering if you had dropped out of the blogosphere for good, or what.

Just now I got back in the door from attending someone's 75th birthday celebration, sat down at my computer, and started googling on Dean's World to see if I could pin down when you, uh, disappeared from there. Could find no comments of yours more recent than July 5. Then I popped over here to Rosemary's blog, and voila! Here you are. Talk about a coincidence!

Well, anyhow, good to hear from you. Now I've got to hit the road again, attend some GOP dinner this evening in Rossville. Good food, hanging out with some area folks I know, and listening to some Iowa congressman speak: well, two out of three ain't bad.

Thank goodness. I was really afraid to find out the answer to where is Arnold Harris. I'm glad you're fine!

Arnold Harris:
Hello, Paul. Good hearing from you too. GOP dinner at Rossville, eh? I can't begin to compute the number of political dinners I've sat through over the decades. I've often wondered whether or not the Democrats serve better food at these events. It would be nice to see you around Madison some day.

Hello, Rosemary. I remembered the id and password without pestering you via email. Then I recalled the need to add html stuff so the posts would format properly. I hope life is going well for you, Dean, Draco, and whatever dogs and/or cats that keep you guys as pets.

One day, I suppose, I will be less than fine. But I don't spend much of what remains of my time thinking on this stuff. Life consists of squinting at the alarm clock. Sticking the left leg out from under bed covers and planting it on the floor. Then the same for the right leg. Then sitting up. Then standing up. And thus begins another day in the life of Arnold Harris. And just about everybody else.

Actually, yes, I was wondering, too.

Only thing is, Arnold, you make it sound like the rest of us don't have anything to do, either!

Bloggers (and commenters) with nothing else important -- and pressing -- and overdue -- to do are not the ones anyone wants to listen to!
