Bigots Are People Too

Barack Obama is super inclusive. Unfortunately, if you're gay, one of the people Obama includes (Pastor McClurkin) thinks you are "a curse" and are "trying to kill our children".

Obama's response to those who are upset over McClurkin's remarks: “…he will not exclude from his campaign the many Americans including many in the African American community who believe the same as Pastor McClurkin.”

Wow, that is just awesome. With every passing day Obama becomes less and less likely to be the next U.S. President. Listen Barack, you are running for the Democratic nomination, you aren't allowed to sell out the Gays and Lesbians before you become President, only after. Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

"Bigots Are People Too" could also be "People Are Bigots Too". Nearly all people are bigots. I'm bigotted against Democrats. I used to be bigotted against Republicans. I think I fight my bigottry pretty hard, but maybe I'm really a wuss when confronting my own internal demons.

In the next cube there is a man bigotted against mice. Catty-corner is a woman bigotted against spiders. I'm also bigotted against wasps and broccoli.

I'm sure there are many inanimate objects I'm bigotted against (Dodge Caravans) as well as laws (National Security Letters) and memes (Marxism). But that's another story.

Comets and rockets are way cool.

Mark Adams, who's always correct, get used to it. (mail) (www):
I really shouldn't have to do this Wince, but since that was one of the most purposely obtuse and unfunny things you've said in a while (who knows whether you were going for humor or feigning deliberate ignorance -- either way you missed the mark.)
Bigot: One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

Don't do that any more, it's annoying. Dislike and bigotry are two different things.

And Yes Rose, this is not just about a lapel pin, hand over heart, or other made-up non-controversy, but are stunning lack of judgment on Obama's part.

Not that he associated with this guy in the first place, but by not cutting him loose since this kind of baggage is not something Obama needs.

Really inexplicable, and it looks naive and arrogant all at once. I've seen enough of that in the Oval Office lately. That and this goes against every single theme of the Democratic Coalition. Bad form.

Yes, I too am a bigot. I won't buy a car unless it has the names "Honda" "Subaru" "Toyota" "Mitsubishi" "Lexus" or "Nissan" in front of it.

Mark,

This is not a reply, and is more important than the reply below: Read this comment by wfjag on the nature of bigotry.

This is a reply:

Really? I say that wasps, broccoli, Dodge Caravans, National Security Letters and Marxism are not in my group. I am in strongly in favor of my group (humans) and am intolerant of these things which differ.

When did you become a strict constructionist? No metaphors? No analogies? No extrapolating from the particular (bigottry) to the mental habits from which it springs?

Irrational or unreasoned dislike is an important component of bigotry. A rational or reasoned dislike (perhaps because the other group has exercised oppressive power over your group) of those who differ is not bigotry.

Wince

False dichotomy much . . . Wince. Practicing your Orwellian Doublespeak?

Keep practicing. You are far, far away and have a long time to go to become a Jedi at this stuff. Think yourself around this conundrum, it is bigotry to be intolerant of the intolerant?

Rhianna (mail) (www):
Tom, how dare you pull a Bush Sr! Broccoli is good for you, and tastes good both raw and cooked with butter. Seriously though, have you ever tried the 'gourmet' versions (purple, Romano, etc)? They'll knock your socks off, and I've made several anti-broccoli folks actually eat it, if not outright like and ask for it. Baby steps...

As for bigots, you people need to expand your viewpoints. There is some much more to be bigoted against that cars and vegetables! Come on, look at all the variety of the world, now let's hate it! ;)

Mark, I can't tell what you are talking about. You are being too obscure. I'm exploring the nature of bigotry a little here and that it is something humans do. I'm not at all sure what your comments addressed to me are about. What did you think of wfjag's Bosnian story?

Think yourself around this conundrum, it is bigotry to be intolerant of the intolerant?

I've thought about it a great deal and have reached no firm conclusions.

OK. To go straight to Mark's point, I believe I'm bigotted against Marxists. But I'm not bigotted against communtarian living. Monasteries and communes are cool.

Let's see,

Jesse Jackson and others say he's too white.

Now, you're saying he's not gay enough.

Is that about right or maybe even left ?

Convents?!? You bring that up on a Friday night, and I'm all alone on my birthday? You bastard!! ;-)

Yes, Hillary and I share something more than a dream for universal health care.

Happy birthday, Tim. Many happy returns of the nun, when ++ungood figures out the regulations.
